Tennis Court Construction

How it's made, a step-by-step process:

Acrylic Resurfacing

Sub Base Excavation

The process starts with the removal of topsoil and excavation of organic materials to achieve the specified court elevation, placement, and orientation. In some cases, additional measures, such as tree removal or rock drilling may be necessary. Excavation depths may vary to address these unique requirements.

During the excavation process, court drainage and utility trench systems are installed. Upon achieving the appropriate subgrade, base material is distributed across the court surface, preparing it for the precise base installation of laser grading.

(Laser Grading & Compaction)

ASBA guidelines are used to ensure industry best practices for court slope and planarity. Our commitment to precision is further enhanced with automated laser grading equipment. This technology achieves unparalleled accuracy in meeting specifications.

Once the court slope is established, our construction team focuses on base compaction, completing 4-6” lifts at a time, ensuring the new base material is thoroughly compacted and layered. This process serves to eliminate any potential unstable areas, proactively mitigating the risk of future issues.

Chain Link Fencing

Chain link fencing installation is ideally integrated during construction phases. Commercial installations have a recommended 10-foot height and often a durable galvanized finish. In residential settings, the fencing typically stands at 10 feet, featuring 'gallery style' sections of 4 feet in black vinyl chain link. Perimeter fencing serves dual functions, providing effective ball containment and enhancing overall court security.

Following excavation and base installation, there are two types of hard courts that we commonly install prior to the final acrylic surface installation: Asphalt Penetration or Hot-Mix.

Asphalt Penetration

Asphalt Penetration, often referred to as 'soft asphalt,' comprises a series of stone layers sealed with RS-1 asphalt emulsion. Enclosed by a perimeter brick edger, this 2.5-inch thick asphalt layer delivers a clean, sharp edge finish.

Tennis Court Construction

Widely adopted in court construction, this method offers extended longevity and heightened resistance against surface cracks and low spots. Moreover, the inherent softness of this asphalt contributes to an enhanced playing experience, providing players with increased enjoyment while simultaneously minimizing joint pain, body ache, and the risk of injury.

Hot-Mix (HL3)

Utilizing a mechanical spreader, 2-3 inches of compacted fine asphalt is installed for the creation of a new hard court, a process similar to road and parking lot construction.

Acrylic Resurfacing

Emphasizing quality throughout is crucial during this phase, ensuring integrity of seams and joints. In contrast to an asphalt penetration court, the Hot-Mix (HL3) base is intentionally rigid, lacking flexibility. This characteristic presents challenges during seasonal weather changes, as the court materials may expand and contract, requiring careful consideration in design and maintenance.

What Lies Beneath

CSS Ltd. Fiberglass Membrane Underlay

Our CSS Ltd. Fiberglass Membrane Underlay, a proprietary product developed by our team, is a cornerstone in both our new construction and restoration projects. Its primary function is to proactively prevent premature deterioration resulting from surface cracking.

With a track record of long-term success, this product has earned us recognition, including the opportunity to speak at the 2023 annual ASBA (American Sports Builders Association) conference. Our discussion focused on effectively mitigating common asphalt issues, bringing awareness of the positive impact of the fiberglass membrane underlay.

Laykold Masters & Acrytech CusionX

In response to the growing demand for enhanced surface durability, prolonged court longevity, and a diminished risk of injury, cushion surface installations have become increasingly popular.

Unlike conventional liquid cushion products, these specialized 'shock pads' undergo a gradual hardening process, providing players with an impressive 21% force reduction. This innovative feature prevents premature surface cracking but also contributes to a more enjoyable playing experience.

Surface Preparation

After the installation and curing of base for a minimum of 14 days, courts undergo a thorough assessment. The base is flooded or inspected after a rainfall to identify any low spots (bird baths). These are then corrected to ASBA guidelines.

Subsequent steps include clearing the courts of vegetation, installing in-ground footings for game accessories, and a final cleaning process. This careful approach ensures the removal of imperfections and guarantees optimal adhesion for our acrylic resurfacing product.

Acrylic Resurfacer

When surface preparation is completed, up to three coats (or as required) of acrylic resurfacer is installed. This process is frequently in conjunction with the CSS Ltd. fiberglass membrane installation. As each coat of acrylic resurfacer is applied, our team utilizes a combination of machine and hand tools to carefully prepare the desired surface for the final color coat.

Acrylic Colour Coat

This is the stage where clients see their vision come to life! A diverse range of tournament or custom colors of industry leading acrylic top coats are chosen and then installed.

These top coats are engineered for high performance and are UV-stabilized to minimize fading and degradation. This helps ensure a vibrant, long-lasting desirable surface that can be enjoyed for years to come.
